Thomas Cook suggests UK holiday market will hold up in recession
Tour operating giant Thomas Cook has today released a statement suggesting the UK holiday sector is effectively recession proof. The bold statement has surprised many but when you consider how much capacity and additional cost the business has taken from its overheads and the seemingly insatiable appetite for an annual holiday, they may well have a point.
There have been a number of comments of late regarding the ongoing demand for holiday destinations across the world and the fact that many of the UK population do seem able to find the money when required. However, much of the ongoing interest in the sector appears to have been stimulated by a number of discounts and special offers which have been used to "hook" many of the UK population.
This is not the first ongoing recession which the holiday industry has managed to navigate better than most, although we have seen some of the weaker companies struggle over the last few months and indeed some have gone under. For those looking to get away in 2008 or 2009 the Internet will be something of a godsend with promotions and offers brought to your screen on a regular basis.
