Is global warming set to take a back seat?
As the recession continues to grab hold of the European markets there have been calls from within the EU to suspend the promise of massive global warming targets which were introduced just a couple of years ago. There is concern that the ongoing climate change programme is coming at a time when few countries have enough money to fund it and consumers are struggling to cover a number of additional taxes relating to the program.
While the subject of global warming and how to protect the environment is a long-term goal for many countries around the world, it would appear that now is not the time to go piling taxes on top of taxes with consumers and businesses unable to fund their current expenses. There is some confusion and disagreement within the EU as to whether the climate change programme should continue as planned or indeed be suspended until economies pick up. This has the potential to cause major upset as France and the UK appear to be at loggerheads with Germany which has seen its power within Europe reduced in line with its economy.
As we have seen in the UK, green issues tend to mean green taxes, but now is probably not the time to introduce any new charges.
