UK consumers downsizing their food consumption
The pizza chain Domino's Pizza has today revealed that UK consumers are downsizing their supplies of more healthy and more expensive food in favour of some of the cheaper ranges across the UK retail environment. As if to highlight the point we have seen the likes of Asda and Tesco introduce their new one pound range of foods which has attracted the attention of cost conscious UK consumers.
However, there is growing concern that the health of the UK nation is not what it should be as the move to cheaper foods gathers pace. This comes at a time when the likes of diabetes and obesity are taking a grip of the worldwide population with the UK now moving towards a similar situation to that seen in the US. The figures for obesity in the UK are shocking and with cheap fast foods in high demand there appears little chance of an improvement in the short term.
Traditionally the government would have issued guidance but as many of the UK population are struggling to make ends meet it is simply a case of needing to shop within a smaller budget. The UK government would risk upsetting the UK consumer if they were to introduce any conditions on the range of cheap foods across the country even though there are health concerns.
