Demand for foreign holidays still high
It has been revealed that demand for foreign holidays from the UK population is much stronger than many had suggested only a few weeks ago. There were concerns that the substantial reduction in spending power of sterling would see cost increases scaring off many holidaymakers from the UK. However, it looks as though many in the UK are still determined to have their time overseas away from the doom and gloom of the UK economy.
Figures from Thomson holidays suggests that 87% of UK customers are looking at overseas holidays this year, a figure which is unchanged from the same period last year. Remarkably, a recent surge in bookings would seem to back up the suggestion that UK holidaymakers are determined to shrug off the effects of the ongoing UK recession. Whether they will still feel in holiday mood when they land on foreign shores and realise the spending power of sterling has reduced substantially remains to be seen.
In general the UK holiday market has remained surprisingly strong throughout the recession although the likes of Thompson have reported a change in popular destinations with more and more people looking away from the Eurozone. Places such as Egypt and Turkey are in great demand where the impact upon the exchange rate would appear to be less than against the euro.
