Don't soup up your sierra, kids

Younger drivers are always going to pay higher car insurance costs than older, more experienced drivers, but the British Insurers Brokers' Association (BIBA) says that souping up your car will just pump up your premium further.BIBA says it is advisable to buy a smaller, cheaper car, which is less likely to do major damage to other vehicles on the road should an accident occur, but although the temptation is to make your current model look sportier, add-ons could mean more money spent on car insurance.Graeme Trudgill, technical services manager at BIBA, commented: "I think firstly the most important thing is to make a sensible choice over the type of car that they choose to have as their first car. On many occasions we see young drivers wanting to buy something sporty. If you buy something that's grouped a level higher it’s going to be expensive on insurance and cost a lot of money."He added: "It's also very tempting for young drivers to modify their vehicle, put on alloy wheels and things like that, that is a bit of an insurance nightmare and will raise their premium again so best to leave the car as bare as possible."He added that while youngsters wait until birthdays automatically reduce their premiums, keeping a clean driving licence and no claims bonus will help keep premiums down in the meantime.
