Clocks go back, car insurance claims go up

According to figures from Norwich Union, as the clocks go back, heralding the start of winter, insurers will see a massive increase in the number of motorists making claims on their policy. With nights getting darker after the switch back to Greenwich Mean Time on Sunday October 28th, many people will find themselves driving in the dark for the first time in months, with some 15 per cent of drivers admitting that they find it hard to adapt to the new conditions. Simon Warsop, head of statistics at Norwich Union, said: "This weekend heralds the onset of long winter nights. But that doesn't mean you need to be caught out in the cold." He added that motorists "need to adapt their driving behaviour to driving in the dark," adding: "For many of them, this will be the first time driving home from work in darkness for some time, and extra caution and awareness is required."Celebration like Halloween and Bonfire Night also have an impact for insurers at this time of year, with claims for malicious damage to cars doubling on October 31st and increasing by around 1.4 times on November 5th.
