Older people face insurance prejudice, says charity

Thursday 1st November 2007

Many older people who are healthy and want to travel are "frequently shown the door by ageist travel insurers" who will not cover provide them with cover, a spokesperson for the charity Age Concern has said.

According to Age Concern, as many as 92 per cent of travel insurance policies impose upper age limits on who they will cover, and up to a third of people report having experienced age discrimination from insurance companies

The spokesperson said that ageism is "a particularly big problem in getting insurance", even though over-fifties are more often more likely to have the time and money to travel than their younger counterparts.

She called for insurers to "listen and respond" to older consumers, and added: "Someone's age should not determine whether they are fit to travel. When older people themselves see no barriers to travelling and there are no relevant medical issues then companies should not restrict their activities."
