Biba urges "sensible precautions" for winter drivers

Wednesday 19th December 2007

Motorists heading out over the cold winter period are being advised to ensure they take "sensible precautions" to reduce the risk of an accident.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba), said that motorists "need to take care" and "make sure their cars are ready for winter".

He explained: "The darkness, the wet roads and the icy roads all lead to claims, so certainly it’s a little tougher out there in these sorts of weather conditions."

Mr Trudgill added: "Take your insurance details with you and your breakdown details with you. Just jot them down on a bit of paper and put them in the glove-box. If something happens, you’ll know who to phone, what your reference numbers are."

Friday December 21st is expected to be the busiest day to travel over the Christmas and new year period, according to research from the AA, but that is also the shortest day of the year, when hours of sunlight are reduced, resulting in an increased chance of a collision or accident.
