'Rainy conditions make home insurance even more important'

Wednesday 23rd January 2008

Worsening weather conditions in the UK have highlighted the importance of a comprehensive home insurance policy, it has been claimed.

According to a new study from Abbey Home Insurance, just over one in ten (11 per cent) of British properties have been damaged during the last five years.

Of these, the majority sustained damage to roofs and gardens, although a quarter of the cases examined involved damage inside the home.

Should you be the victim of weather damage to your home, the average bill you are likely to face is £2,699, the survey warned.

Lloyd Wilson, head of Abbey Home Insurance product development, said that the findings should make the need for home insurance clear to the UK's property owners.

He said: "Bad weather damage is a costly inconvenience and for some people, especially in flood areas, it is becoming a yearly nightmare.

"Our research shows that the risk of damage to our homes is an ever-increasing reality and we need to be prepared for it."
