Extreme weather prompts insurance warning

Thursday 31st January 2008

Homeowners in areas set to be hit by extreme weather conditions have been advised to check their home insurance policies.

Earlier this week, the Met Office confirmed that severe gales are due in South West and South East England and in Wales and London.
Heavy snow is also anticipated to fall in Wales and in the north and west of Scotland.

With the gales in particular capable of causing damage to homes and property, those in affected parts of the country should act fast and check they have comprehensive home insurance, Martyn Foulds of Halifax Home Insurance has warned.

He said: "With the average claim for storm damage costing around £1,000, it is advisable for homeowners to take preventative steps to reduce the risk of damage to their homes, and also ensure they have adequate home insurance cover in place."

Homeowners can also minimise the risk of costly damage by taking simple steps, Mr Foulds added.

These include clearing gutters to reduce the risk of blockages and securing garden furniture.
