Rugby fans urged to check travel insurance

Rugby fans heading off to foreign shores for the Six Nations tournament should be ensure they are covered for accidents, even though their trips are likely to be short in duration, a travel insurance provider has warned. According to Halifax Home Insurance, travellers frequently opt to head abroad without travel insurance for weekends having reasoned that because their trip is so short the risk of accident or injury is minimised. However, the insurer advises that irrespective of the duration of the trip "the same risks still apply" and urged fans to ensure they are appropriately covered. Paul Birkhead, senior manager of underwriting for Halifax Travel Insurance said: "Excited rugby fans travelling to France, Italy or Ireland during the tournament will no doubt check, double check, and triple check their passports and match tickets before they go, but one thing that often gets overlooked is travel insurance." Mr Birkhead added that the most prudent option for fans is an annual travel insurance policy which will cover them for all the trips they make while following their team and which will work out cheaper than taking out individual policies each time they travel.
