Smokers warned to come clean with insurers

Smokers who lie to insurance providers are jeopardising the financial security of their dependents, it has been claimed. Research conducted by Onlyinsurance.com found that the premiums for non-smokers are frequently half the price of those charged of smokers. This is born out by the fact that a non-smoking 40-year-old pays an average monthly premium of £49.26 per month for critical illness cover. A smoker of the same age could expect to be charged around £93.78. However, while acknowledging the temptation to deceive home insurance companies must be strong, Ian Durrell of Onlyinsurance warned that doing so could mean that insurers reject the claim if evidence of the lie is uncovered. He said: "Smokers who declare they have given up but continue to smoke, no matter how infrequently, will be paying for nothing should they die from a smoking related condition. "The policy simply won't pay out and their beneficiaries will be the losers."
