Brits warned over lying to car insurers

Thursday 8th May 2008

Britons have been urged to come clean with car insurance providers or risk being barred from the roads if their fraudulent claim is discovered.

In a poll conducted by moneysupermarket.com, people were asked how they would react in the event of their car being stolen as a result of it being left unlocked.

Of the sample some 33 per cent said that they would lie to their car insurance provider rather than risk their claim being rejected.

However, according to Richard Mason, director of insurance at moneysupermarket.com, this is a risky strategy with potentially ruinous consequences.

He said: "You may think telling a little white lie, or holding back the whole truth is no cause for concern, but if your claim is as a result of your own wrong-doing, then insurers are likely to see it as fraudulent.

"I urge all drivers to tell the full truth, but even more importantly, secure their cars. Providers may well refuse to cover you in the future, if you are found out, scuppering your chances of driving altogether."
