A significant number of Britons are driving without car insurance, despite the huge risks involved.
In a poll conducted by Sainsbury's Car Insurance, around 1.15 million people confessed to having got behind the wheel of a car in the last 12 months without an insurance policy.
The largest proportion of these were young drivers, with those in the 17-24 age range accounting for two-fifths of the total.
Conversely, older drivers were far less inclined to drive without cover, with less than one per cent of those over-65 committing the offence.
A statement from the firm alerted motorists opting to go without cover of the severe penalties involved and highlighted the impact it has on the finances of other road users.
It said: "It is illegal to drive a car without insurance, and penalties for those caught doing this include fines, being banned from driving and even having your car crushed!
"The cost of uninsured motorists adds an extra £25 to £30 to the average annual car insurance premium."
