Overseas Car Insurance Is Hard To Follow

A report by Which? magazine has spotted the emergence of an alarming situation with regards to the hiring of cars when you are on business or holidays overseas. It seems as though the vast majority of those involved do not have a clue what cover the insurance offers, with many unaware of a range of excess payments which are activated in the event of an accident.

Many people do not even question what they are buying, with massive numbers blind to the fact that hire car companies will very often add a personal accident insurance premium onto their charges, even though any standard travel insurance would offer similar cover. It has also been claimed that the vast majority of insurances actually cover the hire firm against damage but can still leave the customer out of pocket in the event of a broken windscreen, damage to tires, etc.

The moral of the story is that you should know what you are buying, what you are covered for and also ask yourself if you actually need to take up the hire car company’s offer. While it can be difficult to prove mis-selling, there is potential for further investigation by the European authorities in due course.
