Under pressure chief executive of British Airways, Willie Walsh has sounded the end of the golden age of cheap air travel and predicts that many of the budget airlines will struggle over the coming years. The mass of £1 special travel offers have gone, we are even seeing the budget airlines increase prices and an array of extra charges are expected in due course.
If there is one company in that UK which has suffered with the rise and rise of the budget airlines it has been British Airways. They saw their main markets come under pressure from long haul competitors, they saw their short term (often lucrative routes) come under pressure form the local budget airlines and all at a time when costs were rising.
There are many in the market that now believe that this will see British Airways claim back much of the ground which they lost. The rise and rise of the oil price will see more of the smaller companies hitting financial trouble and the days of ultra cheap travel will be under real pressure. While the sector tends to perform in cycles, there are many out there who feel that the budget sector may not be able to rise again from the ashes. |
