Cable And Wireless Close To Thus Deal

Sunday 29th June 2008

While the initial offer of 165p a share was rejected by the Thus board, it seems that the two telecom companies may be close to announcing an agreed offer in the region of 180p to 200p a share. The bid by Cable and Wireless is worth close to £400 million for Thus and would ensure that the group has a more solid financial base for the future.

It seems that the self imposed termination date of tomorrow at 5pm, which Cable and Wireless has been very open about, has brought both parties back to the table knowing that each will be stronger with the other. Cable and Wireless itself has also been mentioned as a possible takeover target and many in the City see this as literally a last throw of the dice to fight off predators for the group itself.

Very much in line with Cable and Wireless, Thus has had a very chequered past having nearly gone under on a couple of occasions but eventually pulling through when many other fledgling telecom groups went under. The company has a lot to offer with a growing telecom and broadband customer base, but the extra fire power offered by the larger Cable and Wireless group would see the company move onto a different level.
