Can Energy Cost Reductions Save Jobs?

Tuesday 22nd July 2008

The government sponsored Carbon Trust has just released a detailed report into the UK business market and the lack of energy efficient systems in the work place. The Trust estimates that over £2.5 billion a year could be cut from industry energy bills with the potential to save over 100,000 jobs in the process. However, it is the 22 million cut in carbon emissions which has caught the eye of the government and will be used in the next phase of Labour’s ‘Green’ revolution.

Like most of the UK population, businesses took very little notice of their energy bills when business was booming but now times are a little harder there is an interesting opportunity to cut some of the fat from corporate UK. Simple things such as switching off light, computers, etc at night time will help, but the installation of energy efficient air conditioning systems and other machinery will pay for itself very quickly.

The UK seems to have been a little slower than most countries around the work in the area of “Green” savings, but maybe this report will focus the minds of those in the world of business. Money is talking louder than ever before in the current environment!
