BAA Sues Ryanair For Unpaid Landing Fees

News that BAA is suing Ryanair for unpaid landing fees accumulated at the groups Stansted airport is probably the last bit of news the company would want in the public eye at the moment. While there is no suggestion whatsoever that the group is not able to pay the fees, the headlines in the press could easily be misinterpreted.

The argument goes back to April this year when BAA decided to push ahead with landing fee price rises, something which Ryanair has been very much against from day one. After flatly refusing to pay the increase in charges, Ryanair is now primed to go to court and fight for the right to a 'fair hearing' from BAA. Sadly this is a reflection of current times in the aviation industry with all parties looking to shore up their income streams and fighting loss of business and rising prices.

On top of the news that Ryanair will make a loss for the current year, their planes have only been 89% full this year against 90% last year and there have been problems with the price of fuel, this does not cast the sector in a good light. There are concerns about the future of Ryanair although the recent fall in the price of oil will take some pressure off, especially with news that the company did not hedge their fuel supplies at higher prices and will benefit fully from the recent fall in the oil price.
