Government targets UK pensioners in advertising program

The UK government has recently instigated a £400,000 publicity drive aimed at alerting UK pensioners to the £4.9 billion in pension credits which go unclaimed each and every year. It is estimated that 1.8 million people in the UK are eligible for pension credits but have never claimed them and are losing out on the financial front. At a time when the cost of living in the UK seems to be rising yet higher, there is specific concern about winter fuel bills as we approach the "cold snap".

The advertising program, which will be channelled through bingo halls, local markets, working men's clubs and mobile teashops, will advise pensioners how to apply for pension credits and show them exactly what they might be able to claim. While many believe that this particular type of advertising program is long overdue, at least there is some movement on this particular front with so many pensioners struggling to survive on the "meagre" state pension.

When you consider that many pensioners will have been "ignoring" pension credits for many years, with unclaimed annual payments of £4.9 billion, the mind boggles as to how much people have effectively "thrown away". Perhaps this new advertising scheme will have a beneficial impact on the lives of many pensioners in the UK although time will tell.
