Report Suggests Exams For Estate Agents

While the fearsome reputation of estate agents of the past may not fully reflect the more structured approach to the industry of today, a new report suggests that it is time for estate agents to sit exams before they are able to work in the industry. Surprisingly it seems that currently anyone can work as an estate agent and start selling to the public without a single relevant qualification - a little strange when you consider the large amounts of money involved.

The report in question was commissioned by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, the National Association of Estate Agents and the Association of Residential Letting Agents. The report suggests that as well as entrance exams, all estate agents should be forced to take annual refresher examinations to ensure that they are as up to date with industry changes as possible.

While the research makes interesting reading for those in the industry and consumers alike, a recent report by the industry Ombudsman gives further strength to the suggestions. It seems that last 2007 saw a massive 31% increase in the number of complaints lodged against estate agents (11,100 in total), something which needs to be addressed as soon as possible if the industry is to retain the trust of the public.
