Norwich City council pledges action after homes scandal

Norwich City council, a Labour controlled council, has today confirmed it will "make good the damage" caused after revelations that elderly tenants were evicted from their properties in order to accommodate senior council staff. It appears a number of senior citizens were evicted from their prime low rent homes only to be replaced by senior Norwich City council officials who were able to enjoy very attractive rental terms.

This move could not have come at a worse time as UK consumers struggle to survive and the elderly appear more than ever cut adrift on reduced incomes. While there has been a suggestion that energy costs will come down in the New Year this does not help many elderly people in the UK as we move through the Christmas period into the New Year. Quite how Norwich City council will "make good" this situation remains to be seen but it would appear a criminal investigation could be on the cards.

It appears that a development earmarked for demolition and rebuilding had seen a number of elderly tenants evicted with the suggestion that they would be welcomed back into new homes when available. However, it now appears that the new development was advertised in an internal council staff newsletter to which a number of applications were received from council staff.
