Gordon Brown champions credit card suffers
In a move which is purely and simply designed to grab the headlines Gordon Brown has today come out in favour of UK consumers who are drowning under the ever rising tide of credit card debt. He has promised to clamp down on credit card companies pushing ahead with further credit card interest rate rises and indeed there are plans to give UK credit card customers the statutory right to reject credit card interest rate rises and continue to pay off their existing debt at current rates.
While there is no doubt, assuming that these suggestions will actually reach the statute book, that UK consumers will benefit from this and a number of other proposed changes from Gordon Brown there is concern about the timing. Credit card interest rates have been rising for the last two years and just ahead of the next general election it is ironic that the UK government steps forward with a plan of attack. This has the aura of a vote enticing move by the UK government although in reality every government in history has taken a similar path ahead of a general election.
Why is it that MPs and the government only become champions of the people when they want your vote?
