BT under pressure after changing evening call times

At a time when the UK telecom market is more competitive than ever before it seems a rather strange moment for British Telecom to risk the wrath of customers by changing the times at which UK customers can make free evening phone calls. The company is changing its "evening" start time from 6 PM to 7 PM which will impact on many of the company's 10 million customers.

While customers will only need to wait an extra hour to make free evening calls under the various packages available this is likely to save the company money and impact upon the telephone use of many customers. There have been a number of complaints already with some angry at the way in which they were informed of the changes. The company is unlikely to do a U-turn although it does risk the likes of Virgin Media and other UK telephone operators attempting to snatch customers from the UK giant.

British Telecom has worked hard to rebuild its status as a leading UK telecoms operator after many customers decided to try out one of a raft of other telecom operators in the UK. It is unclear exactly how much money British Telecom will save by changing the start time for free evening calls but there must be something in it for the company in the short, medium and longer term. This comes at a time when British Telecom is under pressure with regards to an enormous pension fund deficit which the company will need to make up in the short, medium and longer term.
