Asda announces ambitious plans for the future
UK retailing giant Asda has today announced plans to become the nation's biggest seller of clothing, homewares and entertainment by the year 2015 as well as the second largest food retailer in the UK. These are ambitious plans for the company after a major management reshuffle earlier this week appeared to cast some doubt on the short-term direction of corporate plans. So what exactly does Asda have in mind?
It would appear that parent company Wal-Mart is concerned about the short-term performance of the operations and as such has instigated various management changes and a new strategy for the future. The attempt to take on Tesco regarding non-food sales and Sainsbury regarding food sales is ambitious but nevertheless Wal-Mart has the financial backing and management clout to make it happen.
It would appear that we find ourselves on the verge of a major competition drive in the UK supermarket sector which could see consumers benefit with the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury unlikely to step to one side and allow Asda to have it all its own way. These are certainly interesting times for UK consumers looking for value for money and larger supermarkets which literally sell everything they will need.
