Can the Conservative party afford to reorganise the benefit system?
There is no doubt that the UK benefit system is one of the most lucrative in the world but there is also no doubt that the system has been somewhat out of control for the last few years. However, Iain Duncan Smith has now been put in charge of reorganising the UK benefit system but many are concerned whether the Conservative Party has the bottle and whether it can actually afford to push through the changes being mentioned.
There is no doubt that many people are stuck in a poverty trap where a life on benefits is far more lucrative than the potential income they might hope to bring in with a full time job. As a consequence, the number of people directly and indirectly dependent upon the UK state has ballooned under the Labour party government. The Conservative party has promised to make major changes to the system but these changes will make David Cameron one of the most unpopular prime ministers of all time. It will also reduce, albeit in the short term, the income for many low-income families and grab all of the wrong headlines.
Whether David Cameron will be forced to water down his initial proposals remains to be seen but changes are afoot.
