Online shopping continues to gain in popularity
A report by IMRG has confirmed that the appetite for online shopping in the UK continues to grow with £4.5 billion spent online in May which was a 22% increase over the same period last year. While the base figure may well have been artificially low, due to the recession, there is no doubt that demand for online shopping continues to grow. So what does this mean for the UK retail sector?
Many people believe that the recession has broken the back of consumer mistrust in the Internet and pushed more people online to grab greater discounts and more bargains. This will place more pressure on the margins of traditional retailers, many of which are struggling the moment, and could inevitably lead to more failures in the sector. Even though there will always be a place for your traditional shop on the high street, when you compare high street prices to online prices there can be a significant difference in areas such as clothing and other popular shopping items.
The Internet has literally changed the worldwide economy and will continue to have an impact for many years to come. There is a belief, amongst Internet experts, that we have only just scratched the surface and there is much more to come.
