Wind farms in Scotland could be next growth sector
A report into the Scottish offshore wind industry has suggested that upwards of 28,000 jobs could be created over the next decade with income of over £7 billion generated. There is no doubt that Scotland is the one area of the UK, both onshore and offshore, which offers the most potential for both wind farms and other renewable energies and is something which the government in Scotland is looking to take advantage of.
The report also suggests that a further 20,000 additional employment opportunities could arise from indirect businesses associated with the renewable energy sector. When you consider that the Scottish economy is forecast by many to be the weakest across the UK and one which is likely to take longer to recover from the recession, this news regarding renewable energy sources will be well received.
There are claims that a fully funded and fully operational renewable energy sector in Scotland could effectively power the whole country and leave additional energy supplies to be rerouted into the national grid. How long this particular renewable energy sector would take to create remains to be seen and indeed whether the funding required to make full use of this opportunity is made available.
