New ash tax announced for UK travellers
There is anger today amongst UK travellers with news that British insurer Aviva will be adding £10 to the cost of travel insurance from 1 July in order to cover any costs associated with disruption caused by the ash cloud. The £10 additional cost relates to annual insurance cover for any individual although those booking single trip insurance will only be charged an additional £5.
There has been confusion, concern and dismay at the UK travel insurance sector since the ash cloud issue broke a few weeks ago. Many travellers are still out of pocket despite automatically assuming they were covered for such issues. Now that one of the major insurance companies in the UK has broken ranks it is only a matter of time before the other companies introduce their own additional charges to cover any potential liability in the future.
It is unclear how long this ash cloud issue will continue although with many experts citing the fact that such volcanic activity has been known to continue for up to 18 months it may be with us for some time. If this is the case, and even despite a relaxation of flying rules within ash clouds, this will have a major impact upon the profitability of airline companies and the cost of insurance for travellers.
