UK government under pressure regarding mortgage benefit cuts

The coalition government is this week under enormous pressure to revisit the recent reduction in mortgage benefit payments which has allowed many people to maintain payments after redundancy. The government has effectively halved the mortgage benefit payments available under the previous Labour government, a move which has potentially dire consequences for those in financial trouble.

There is no doubt whatsoever that more and more people will face the prospect of losing their homes in the short to medium term if the UK economy takes a further downturn. When you consider that the backbone of mortgage benefit payments is being reduced at the worst possible time, we can only fear a significant increase in repossessions in due course. While the authorities will claim that mortgage benefit payments were artificially supporting the UK housing market the truth is that there is a lack of affordable council housing and many people would literally have nowhere to go in the event that their home was repossessed.

The potential sight of hundreds if not thousands of UK homeowners being cast onto the streets is not something which would go down well with UK voters at the next election. Will David Cameron take this chance?
