HMRC receives critical report from MPs
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has been criticised by a MPs report which suggests that there is "considerable room for improvement" within one of the UK government's key departments. While there is no doubt that the pressure has been on HMRC for some time, being the central hub to the UK government's tax collection service, there have been a number of alarming situations which have arisen over the last few months.
The debacle which was the posting of literally millions of potentially incorrect tax codes for the 2010/11 tax year was just the latest in a long line of problems which have beset the department. While the government and HMRC itself admits there is a need for significant change in the short to medium term there is no doubt there is pressure on those working for HMRC to deliver a better service as soon as possible.
There is also growing concern that staff morale within HMRC is at an all-time low and there is a need to address this particular problem immediately to ensure the best return for taxpayers and the best working environment for those employed by the department. It would appear that various changes to working practices in the past have placed more pressure upon employees which has resulted in this significant drop in morale.
