Npower to cut 1,400 UK jobs
28/11/2013
Energy giant Npower which employs 9,600 workers in the UK is to cut 1,400 UK jobs, with a number of these being outsourced to India. The cuts are expected to be in relation to site closures at Peterlee in Durham, Thornaby in North Yorkshire, and Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, however it’s expected that Npower will confirm exact details later on.
Npower stated that the reason for the cuts is “to improve our customer service and keep our costs down, at a time of external pressures on customers’ bills.” However, Colin Smith, northern region senior organiser of Union, GMB, shunned Npowers claims that customer service was a reason for job cuts by stating "GMB will vigorously campaign against the offshoring of jobs to India because it has absolutely nothing to do with customer service and everything to do with cost."
Furthermore, German Power giant RWE, which happens to be Npowers parent company announced plans earlier this month to reduce costs of over 1 billion euros, which include the loss of over 6,750 jobs across Europe. RWE also announced that Npower had suffered a 3% fall in operation profits in the first half of 2013 to £176 million, and blamed government regulations for simplified tariffs as well as energy-saving measures in domestic homes.
