Sainsburys to cut 500 jobs

13/01/2015

Supermarket giant Sainsburys has announced it will cut 500 jobs at its stores support centres under new plans to save money after sales figures continue to fall.
The supermarket has said that the loss of staff will effect 13% of employees in the support centres, but there are worries that the reduction could have an impact on even more people as they move workers to other roles.
Sanisburys suffered its first fall in Christmas sales for more than a decade last year, and they predicted that their performance will worsen over the next three months. In November, they announced plans to make £500m of savings in the next three years.
The supermarket will now have a 12 week consultation process to decide which jobs will have to be cut. In a letter sent out to staff, chief executive Mike Coupe said:
"We want to work through this period of uncertainty as quickly as possible, while making sure we consult with colleagues who are affected by these changes,"
"We're committed to treating all impacted colleagues with respect, during what we know will be a difficult time."
Sainsburys are not the only UK supermarket to have to address falling sales. Tesco, Asda and Morrisons also announced declines in Christmas sales as they faced tough competition from discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl.
