Aldi takes over Waitrose as sixth largest UK supermarket
08/04/2015
Discount supermarket chain Aldi has taken over Waitrose as the sixth largest grocer in the UK according to a survey from Kantar Worldpanel.
In the 12 weeks leading up to March this year, Aldi had a 5.3% share of the grocery market. The German retailer saw their sales rise by 16.8%, and managed to beat Waitrose, who had a 5.1% share. Aldi is now the sixth biggest supermarket in the UK as the industry sees dramatic changes, brought on by a change in shopping habits.
Aldi is now close to leapfrogging the Co-op, the UK’s fifth-largest supermarket chain, which is less than one percentage point ahead of the German retailer in terms of market share. Fellow discount supermarket Lidl also saw strong growth, with sales rising by 12.1%.
Tesco still lead the grocer market share. Sales in the 12-week period rose 0.3%, giving them a market share of 28.4%. The other “Big Four” UK supermarkets, Asda, Sainsburys and Morrisons held 17.1%, 16.4% and 10.9% of the market share respectively. They have recently been under pressure from the discount chains, which has lead to the so called supermarket “price wars”.
Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Kantar Worldpanel, said: "The changing structure of Britain's supermarket landscape is illustrated by two facts.
"Firstly, the so-called discounters Aldi and Lidl now command a combined 9% share of the market. In 2012, the same two retailers only accounted for 5.4% of grocery sales.
"Secondly, the 72.8% share taken by the biggest four retailers is now at the lowest level in a decade."

In what is seen by many as an attempt to close a loophole which has allowed thousands of people into the UK under a student visa, the Conservative party is set to put in place proposals which would see every foreign student put forward a bond of £6000. This bond will be payable upon entry to the UK and would be repaid once the student has left the country. However, there is some friction with...
