Postal union members vote in favour of pay deal
In a surprise development it has been announced that the Post Office and the Communication Workers Union have finally come to an agreement regarding pay and working conditions for the future. Members of the union accepted the offer on a basis of 2 to 1 which will see a three-year wage rise of 6.9%, increased job security and above all an improvement in industrial relations between the two parties.
As part of the deal we will also see the introduction of modern machinery and new operational methods across the UK Post Office network. It would appear that a compromise deal has been reached after months and months of fighting, both publicly and behind the scenes. The UK government will be glad to see that a deal has been reached just prior to the election because this particular issue had the potential to blow up in the UK government face.
However, those who believe that the agreement between the Post Office and the Communication Workers Union will herald a new level of co-operation between the business arena and the unions may well need to think again. There is speculation that a number of strikes may well be called after the election - no matter which party or which parties gain control!
