Is the UK government neglecting broadband in the short term?

Labour peer, and author of the Digital Economy Act, Stephen Carter has today stepped into the mix with regards to the controversial subject of broadband in the UK. While he's no longer directly involved in UK politics he has questioned the UK government's apparent decision to delay any significant investment into broadband in the short to medium term.

While there's no doubt that the UK government does appear to have gone cool on broadband in the short to medium term, there are potentially more important issues to address such as public-sector spending cuts. However, whether this delay in investing in UK broadband will come back to "bite" the UK government in the medium to longer term remains to be seen because broadband is a vital element of the UK economy going forward.

Many people believe that the current and previous governments have been very lukewarm in their support of broadband and effectively delays and review after review have left the UK behind some of its counterparts overseas. However, some progress has certainly been made over the last few years and many are hoping this will continue to be a focal point of government policy in the future.
