Scottish exports receive boost
The Scottish government has confirmed that Scottish Development International, the Scottish government's export agency, generated more than £500 million for the Scottish economy in 2009. This came at a time when the Scottish economy, and the UK as a whole, was struggling in the aftermath of the credit crunch and worldwide recession - something which makes this feat even more impressive.
The agency also believes that upwards of 5000 jobs were saved across the Scottish economy and 900 companies were advised about expanding overseas. There is no doubt that the Scottish economy needs all of the help it can get at the moment and an increase in exports will generate significant jobs in the future. This is a country which has depended for many years on oil, gas and banking but slowly the input from these particular sectors is reducing year on year. We are entering a new era for the Scottish economy and the Scottish employment market and any increase in exports will be well received.
There is still some debate as to whether Scotland has the potential to survive as an independent nation with many different experts offering very different views on the future. However, the more strings which can be added to the Scottish economy's bow the better this will be for the future.
