Best holiday money saving tips

10/07/2015

You’ve booked your hotel, chosen your flights and all there is to do now is look forward to a nice, relaxing holiday abroad. Right?

Not quite yet! All of us who have been on holiday know the stress and toll it can cause and take on your wallet. Here at Financialadvice.co.uk we have put together a list of tips for before, during and after your holiday to help you save your pennies and take a little bit of the stress away from the journey.

Before you fly

- Buy a phrasebook or download a language app on your phone. This way, you’ll find it a lot easier to haggle with the locals about prices if you go to any markets, and it will help if you ever get lost!

- Have a look at Tripadvisors “top things to do” section for the place you are going to. It has loads of great ideas for days out and activities, some you may have never stumbled across on your own! It can also tell you when you need to book in advance and has reviews from people who have previously been. A stress free way to plan your days!

- If you can avoid it, try not to get your money exchanged at the airport. Their exchange rates are usually much higher than most travel agents and even supermarkets. Do your research online and find out where has the best exchange rate for the currency you are looking for.

- Call your bank and let them know you are going abroad. This way, you will not have to worry about any blocks on your card due to unusual activity.

- Before you leave, make sure everything in your house is turned off. This includes lights, plug sockets and anything on standby. It will help save energy and stop you from wasting any money!

- While at the airport, turn off mobile 3G/4G, even if you don’t think you will be using your phone much. It will help you avoid any data roaming charges which can be excessive in Europe, and ridiculous outside of Europe.

While abroad

- Make a budget to work out how much you can afford to spend each day, and remember to factor in trips, travel and things like air con. This way, once the big things have been paid for, you can stick to how much money to have to spend each day to make sure you don’t run out of cash by the end of the holiday.

- If you are going to use your credit card to pay for things while on holiday, make sure the card does not have a foreign exchange fee, which could end up costing you a lot of money. Try to pay the credit card off in full as soon as you receive the bill, this way you won’t receive any excess interest charges.

- If you are asked in a shop or restaurant to pay by local currency or sterling when paying by card, always ask to pay by the local currency. If you pay by sterling, there will be high exchange rates applied and you may end up paying a substantial amount more than the price.

- Try to learn how to haggle. Find out how to ask “how much” in the local language, and other phrases that might help you get a lower price. This can help you get a really good deal around the local markets.

- Make sure you are always vigilant of any kind of holiday scam- keep your valuables safe, and stay vigilant. Have a look at this article from The Telegraph detailing the thirteen most common scams to watch out for

When you get home

- When getting your money exchanged, lots of places offer to buy the money back for the same rate if you have not spent it all. Make sure you bring your receipt!

- Try to pay off all your credit card bills as soon as your receive your statements.

- Unpack and do your washing as soon as you can- there is nothing worse than climbing over an unpacked suitcase for two weeks.

- Take it easy for the next week or so. There is no point taking on any large projects at work if your heart is not going to be into it.

- Try not to be too sad! Holiday blues can be horrible, but you can still carry on a bit of your holiday at home. Try to get out in the sun as much as possible, if you ate fresh fish, fruit and vegetables a lot and drank loads of water, try to carry that on at home.

Holidays are some of the funniest, most exciting, different times in your life. Make sure you stay safe, protected and vigilant, but don’t let that stop you having the time of your life.
