What can Alistair Darling do in his next budget?
As we approach the next UK budget there are many rumours flying around Parliament with regards to potential moves by the UK government, the introduction of new tax allowances and forecasts for the future. There appears to be no doubt that UK savers will receive some form of benefit over the next few weeks although exactly how much and when this will kick in the remains to be seen.
In many other areas the severely weakened government budget and the ever increasing national debt could very much tie Alistair Darling's hands behind his back. We may see some tax grabs from the rich and the middle classes, to pass on to the low-income families in the UK, but at best the net change will be neutral and we may even see an increase in some unobvious tax charges.
While many people believe that Alistair Darling's days in office are numbered it is highly unlikely that he will be ejected prior to next year's general election. It will be interesting to see the forecasts for national debt and the government budget deficit next year as suggestion from outside parties are getting worse by the month. The UK government has a fight on its hands as the UK economy looks as if it is one of the weakest in the developed world. Do not expect a giveaway budget!
