Budget Watch : Green issues

As ever it is highly likely that we will see significant bias towards environmentally friendly issues and green policies in the next budget. While many in the UK suspect that the authorities are using the "eco-friendly" trend as a means to increase taxation across the UK this is something which has been refuted on a number of occasions. However, there is no doubt that when green strategies are suggested and announced this inevitably means an increase in taxation for the UK population.

The car industry is one area of business which continues to cry out for assistance from the authorities. There has been speculation as to whether Alistair Darling will push through the "£2000 scrapping allowance" which would see owners of cars over nine years old given a £2000 discount off any eco-friendly vehicles they acquire. Even though this particular policy has been successful in other parts of Europe there are mixed views as to whether or not the UK market is too depressed to make a significant difference in the short to medium term. Whether Alistair Darling goes ahead with the scheme is also in doubt as there appears to be some kind of conflict between the Treasury and Peter Mandelson.

Expect the unexpected when it comes to green taxation and expect to see your general taxes increase year-on-year for some time to come.
