Two Labour peers suspended in cash for laws row

A Sunday Times investigation some weeks ago suggested allegations of cash for laws in the House of Lords in relation to 4 Labour peers. An investigation by the House of Lords has been concluded and two Labour peers have been suspended for six months while another two have been forced to apologise to the house for their conduct.

It is yet another nail in the coffin of the UK political system at a time when thousands of people in the UK are struggling to survive, losing their jobs and losing their homes. The timing of these issues could not be worse with many believing this will do untold damage to the Labour Party and effectively negate any chance of being re-elected in 2010. While the ongoing debacle of MPs expenses continues, the alleged abuse of the system in the House of Lords, where cash deals were allegedly struck in exchange for suggesting and amending existing laws has brought undue attention to the upper house.

Slowly but surely the UK political system is falling apart and many people are dismayed at the attitude and conduct of many who are deemed to be "governing the country". While it will take some time to amend the expenses and regulatory systems associated with UK politics, at least some progress has been made over the last few days.
