Public sector jobs cull on the way
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) have today warned that the UK public sector could lose as many as 350,000 jobs over the next few years. As we watch the growing debate in the House of Commons between the Labour Party and the Conservative party, regarding potential public sector service cuts, it would appear that no matter what each party says, significant cuts are on the way.
It is no secret that over the last 10 years we have seen a significant increase in the workforce in the public sector which has in many ways hidden underlying concerns and problems with the UK employment market. However, many people believe that employee numbers in the public sector have reached chronic proportions and with significant budget cuts on the way it is inevitable we will see jobs follow.
While the Conservative party has been "outed" with regards to plans to cut the public sector budget by 10% over the next few years, the Labour Party is still clinging to the official party line that real investment will increase in the public sector into the future. However, newspapers today suggest a totally different story with indications of potential fallout within the Cabinet over the public sector budget. Will the real story emerge before the next general election?
