Check all of your tax demands!

It has been revealed that in the UK governments rush to gather "outstanding tax debts" a number of debt collectors have been appointed for claims which have eventually been found to be invalid. It is believed that in excess of £2 billion of "phantom tax demands" have been acted upon only to find out they are either incorrect, have been paid or are invalid. Despite assurances from the UK government that those who cannot pay will not be forced over the edge, a number of very disturbing tactics appear to be in use.

It is believed that the Treasury holds details of £21.5 billion of outstanding unpaid tax, interest and penalty charges for businesses and individuals in the UK. A number of these debts go back many years with people surprised when the debt collector knocks on their door. We have a similar situation to the CSA debacle in which computer errors and mismanagement of information is placing excessive strain on innocent individuals and businesses.

As more and more examples of errors and problems with the Treasury computer system come to the surface, it is believed that many of these claims would never stand up in court. It is a sign of desperation that the UK government is now looking at unpaid taxes after leaving many of these for years and actually writing some off.
