Has the MPs expenses debacle been swept under the carpet?
It is some months now since the MPs expenses debacle hit the headlines and while there was much talk of criminal investigations, party censorship and potential punishments it seems that the issue has gone very quiet over the last few weeks. The politicians have been very clever in pushing other issues to the forefront of the consumer and business worlds taking some of the pressure off those who have been caught "feathering their own nests". So what next?
While there are still a number of criminal investigations ongoing it may well be some time before we hear about any potential charges and prosecutions. As we approach the next general election all parties will be keen to sweep the MPs expenses problem under the carpet and continue with "business as usual". We have a new speaker in the House of Commons, we have a new expenses system on the way although this potential good work could be undone with MPs looking to protect their expenses from publication in the future.
While the various party figureheads would suggest that changes have been made and this issue will not hit the headlines in the future, there are many who believe it is still "business as usual".
