Why do politicians never listen to the public?

As the UK economy is apparently set for at least a short-term revival there are still many handouts and many strategies in place which the UK taxpayer does not ultimately agree with. So why do politicians never listen to the UK public?

While ultimately we vote in the government of the day to oversee the economy and other aspects of the UK, in simple terms they are supposed to be the mouthpiece of UK consumers and businesses. If this is the case, then why do so many governments and so many politicians fail to listen to what the vast majority of the public are saying and what they want?

We are seeing billions upon billions of pounds poured into the UK financial system, while other businesses and companies are left to rot, we are seeing billions upon billions of pounds poured into the IMF, while consumers continue to lose their homes. The truth is that politicians have access to information and statistics which consumers and businesses do not. That is not to say that governments are always right, but the truth is (political leanings aside) that if the UK public and UK businesses were also privy to this information maybe our views would be different?
