Liberal Democrats backtrack on call for savage cuts
The Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has today backtracked on his call for "savage cuts" in the public sector budget. Amid signs that voters were concerned about the potential implications of these so called a savage cuts he has now admitted use of the word "savage" may well have been a step too far. So what exactly are the Liberal Democrats trying to do?
Well aware that there is no possibility that the Liberal Democrats will gain power in the UK in the short to medium term, they have taken it upon themselves to attack the Conservative party over its plans for cuts in public sector investment. However, there is a feeling that the Liberal Democrats are attempting to side with the Labour Party and in the event of a close call in the election they would possibly hold some form of balance of power.
This is a very difficult strategy for the Liberal Democrats to attain because they need to keep their potential allies onside while obviously giving their supporters the impression they have their own policies and their own mind. It will be interesting to see how the week progresses, as the Liberal Democrat conference gets under way.
