Telegraph finally reveals source of leak
The Daily Telegraph has today revealed the source of its leaked MPs expenses data as being one of the employment agency staff brought in to photocopy and process all MPs expenses. It now appears as though the Daily Telegraph paid around £110,000 to a third party acting on behalf of the mole although as yet we do not know the name of the contact within the Treasury.
While initially the Daily Telegraph had refused to confirm it paid a six-figure fee for the information, it has now been confirmed that it was in fact a six-figure fee although it is believed that the parties involved were not purely motivated by money. The revelation that it was somebody employed by an outside agency was accompanied by information which suggested that those collating the data on MPs expenses "could not believe their eyes". Indeed it is believed that work had to be halted on a number of occasions because of the disgust and disbelief at the figures which were passing their eyes.
Whether the UK government can now begin an investigation into how the information was leaked to the Daily Telegraph is open to debate because this is an issue which the government and all political parties would rather see the back of.
