Has George Osborne played into the hands of the Labour Party?
George Osborne has today announced plans for the Conservative party to save UK voters £23 billion over the next five years with massive cuts in public sector spending. Indeed, the proposed cuts would be the largest for 30 years, a factor which has surprised many in the UK. So is this a calculated gamble by George Osborne or has he played into the hands of the Labour Party?
There is no doubt that the Labour Party will make much mileage from the proposed public sector investment reduction, however UK voters are well aware that it is either a reduction in public sector services or an increase in taxes which are needed to reduce the national debt and budget deficit. It will be interesting to see how the Labour Party attacks this particular issue because ultimately if they propose only a fraction of the savings mentioned by the Conservative party they could actually lose the faith of UK voters.
The UK budget deficit and national debt has received significant press comment and more people than ever before are well aware that the situation needs to be addressed in the short to medium term. If this particular political move by the Conservative party is successful it could well annihilate the Labour Party at the next election.
