Airline industry makes last ditch attempt to reverse airline tax
The UK government is under pressure today to reverse the latest increase in airline taxes which will push airline ticket prices significantly higher. The new regulations come in today and there are serious concerns that many airlines, consumers, businesses and airports will suffer as the UK government looks to ratchet up income from every area of the UK economy.
The UK airline industry is particularly aggrieved because the UK government had, until a few years ago, been very proactive in encouraging expansion of the industry in the UK which brought in a raft of budget airlines. This massive increase in passenger numbers, dependence upon airlines and the sector as a whole was then undermined as the UK government slowly but surely introduced a number of airport taxes under the guise of "green issues".
While initially there was support across the board for small green tax increases, these have slowly but surely increased in size and are now having a noticeable impact on the cost of airline tickets and airline travel as a whole. This comes at a time when the UK airline industry is struggling to make ends meet and more and more companies are struggling to survive. Could the UK government have picked a worse time to introduce yet another airline tax?
