Alistair Darling promises yet more salary curbs for the City
In what was possibly one of the more predictable responses to criticism of the government's handling of salaries and bonuses in the city, Alistair Darling has promised yet more action despite the fact the government's response to the problem was only issued a few days ago. Well aware that the public has been highly critical of the various U-turns and watered-down regulations released over the last few weeks he has attempted to claim back the higher ground.
However, we have seen promise after promise after promise broken by this government and more and more people are concerned about the future of the UK economy. It is becoming clearer by each day that the UK financial sector is on the whole stronger than the UK government and the UK regulators put together. This is causing additional friction between the various government departments and dismay amongst the public who see their taxes used to support the UK banking sector and bankers walking away with boom-time salaries and boom-time bonuses.
The time for talking is over in the opinion of many of the UK population and we need to see action rather than words and lose the empty promises which have appeared in the press time and time again over the last few weeks and months.
